Has anyone heard of the AVALA Marketing Group? I've received a E-mail requesting me to be a research panel participant. My name was given to them by a RV manufacturer.

Is this a scam or what?

AVALA Marketing grows 200 percent in four years
Ron Janecke

When we last visited with Steve Pizzolato in June of 1999, his database marketing company, AVALA Marketing Group, was just about two years old with a heavy concentration in the high-end recreation field.

We asked Pizzolato at the time if he feared a downturn in the economy and what it would do to his business.

Well, since that visit nearly four years ago, the company has not only seen the economy take a dive, but the Sept. 11 disaster and the war with Iraq have occurred. What effect have these events had on the firm?

Actually, a positive one. While many marketing firms have cut back or gone out of business, AVALA has tripled its revenue. From a $3 million company in 1999, AVALA is headed for $9 million in revenue this year.

"Post-9-11 our business soared," Pizzolato said. "There was a pent-up demand for the products the companies made that we work with. A lot of people said they weren't going to take the $20,000 European vacation, but were going to spend money on things that would keep them closer to home."

The company's first customer, and one of those that has done well since Sept. 11, is Sea Ray Boat Inc., the No. 1 boat manufacturer in the world, based in Knoxville, Tenn.

Sea Ray is typical of the clients AVALA works with -- market leaders in their category. It's also in the recreation field, the area Pizzolato concentrated on to launch his business.

Prince Craft, a boat manufacturer in Canada; as well as Polaris in Minneapolis; Boston Whaler, headquartered in Edgewater, Fla.; and Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corp. of Lake Forest, Ill., have been added as customers. Another new customer is Monaco Coach, one of the country's largest manufacturers of recreational and all-terrain vehicles, based in Coburg, Ore. AVALA works with Monaco's Indiana operations.

Clayton Homes, a Knoxville-based company that produces manufactured homes, and Pinehurst Corp., which owns golf courses, also are new clients.

When Pizzolato started AVALA in Webster Groves, the company provided product research, marketing, analytical testing and number crunching. It has expanded its services to include market analysis and measurable media expenditure, which shows companies where they could get the most for their dollars.
