I am about to both, add the airbox and, while I'm at it, clean the throttle body. I'm told there isn't much to cleaning the TB except spraying the TB with cleaner and wiping it out.
Although I'm adding the S&S Airbox it is very very close to the Ness.
If the TPS has ever been adjusted without the TB being cleaned, then the TPS may require adjustment. That isn't to say it doesn't need it or you wouldn't benefit from having it done.
As for the Air box it is "designed" to be used with the Stage one kit, meaning that you would have the Stage one calibration (and pipes).
If you aren't adding the Stage 1 kit, you are entering into unknown territory. The engine will be able to (and want to) burn more fuel but it won't be there. The reflash that comes with the Stage 1 kit provides more fuel throughout the Rpm Range.
There are no real adjustments to make besides that.
The fantastic Technicians at your favorite dealers might have some experience with piecing it together.
I don't mind experimenting a little to see what happens. I want the performance and the look the Airbox promises to give, but without the loud pipes.
I'm going to try the Airbox without adding either the pipes or the calibration first and see how the engine runs. Then try the calibration and if I have to, add the pipes.
Confused? Discouraged? One thing for sure, those dealer technicians will have an opinion.

how far back do you cut the stock box?

The best way that I found to getting the stock air box out is splitting it down the seam where it is molded together and then cutting it with a hack saw blade. The tech at Warners used a chisel.
I'm told there isn't much to cleaning the TB except spraying the TB with cleaner and wiping it out.
I'm planning on a TB cleaning soon as well. I'm at about 8800 miles currently. I'm plannign to use SeaFoam, since I've got plenty of that (instead of buying a can of carb cleaner) and either using just a rag or an old toothbrush and rag. I trust the SeaFoam will work as well as carb cleaner in getting the job done.

Notes: It looks great the way it exposes all that space up front.
Power is there too, even without the Stage 1 pipes. S&S says the pipes add about 9 HP where as the Air cleaner alone adds 15hp.
under "normal" throttle conditions there is only a small increase in intake noise. I like this because I like a quieter bike.
Under full throttle, the "wahhhh" intake sound catches your attention. A little louder than I expected but, it is to be expected being that you remove a whole lot of plastic box and replace it with a crome covered air filter. A huge increase in airflow!
Below is my note to S&S regarding the process:
It took me about 3 hours.
The directions are geared towards doing it with the engine out of the frame, so there were a few challenges for me.
If you ever decide to add hints for “in frame” installation here are a few comments:
Removing the old
split the box with a chisel starting at the top after removing the cover over the throttle ports.
I used a hand saw and cut the bottom of the filter chamber then pulled it out.
I was able to pull the top section out enough to disconnect the AITS before pulling the section out pulling towards the rear.
The lower section then could be pulled out the same way.
Installing:
Install the smaller hose for the MAP sensor on the barb of the bottom of the air cleaner before you mount it to the throttle body. I found it real hard to get the clamp compressed and slid up with the tools I had on hand.
The routing of the two hoses probably is a matter of opinion, but for an amateur like my self, a picture of how a pro would do it (again in the frame) would be helpful.
The Coil Spacer had no instructions and I was tired. There is a picture and instruction on the coil spacer. I wasn’t sure I need to install it or not. So I didn’t.. How critical is it to install it.
S&S said: You must install it to keep your coil wires from pinching the bottom of the air box
1. What reflash file do I use? Digital Wrench doesn’t have a choice for S&S Air box. Is there a difference between The S&S Slip on and the Victory Stage 1? Is there a Reflash just for the Air box?
S&S: Give me a call on this I can explain this over the phone easier.
I didn’t reflash it at all before I went on a test ride. I don’t have the Stage 1 pipes on and would like to leave them off. What do think about that? How effective is the Air box with out the pipes? Do you see any problems?
S&S: Try 54-0110. You may need to adjust TPS to richen up the mixture.
Test Drive comments:
At low throttle I can hear some high frequency rattle as if there are tiny screws vibrating. I’m sure there aren’t any. DO you suppose it is valves?
S&S: Your probably getting some detonation out of it. The new airbox adds a lot more air and your stock calibration file cant handle the change. I would recommend doing a reflash or use the TPS calibrator tool to richen up your cal file that is in the bike.
In wider openings I was surprised by how loud the engine is now. It sounds cool but because it is in front of me it is quite a change. This is something I’ll have to live with now.
