My clutch cable broke right by the handle leaving me hanging this Saturday. Is this something that has happened before to any of you? I only have 8100 miles on the Kingpin. Glad it's warranteed! How does one keep this from happening again? Should I call Kline where the bike is and tell them something, or is this semi common and they will fix it from happening again.

I am on #3. The first 2 cables had less than 10k miles on each and both broke and the handle.
I am thinking about going to Barnett to see if they have a solution.

I think it's semi-common but completely random.
I have had 3 different Vic's (CC, TC and KP) and have put more than 50K miles on them and never broken a single one.
I would recommend getting a Sav-U-Ride clutch repair kit to keep in your bag. Easy on-the-road repair that won't leave you stranded.

Don't leave home without a Vice-Grip.

I have 55,000 on my 99 and have not broke a one. Use black moly grease on both knuckles. Obe-1 broke a couple till he started using black moly grease.

No solution, just prevention.
Rounded any edges on the lever that the cable might touch.
Removed burrs from anything the barrel might hang up on.
Installed a Barnett cable.
Lubed the barrels.
Lubed the cable.
12,000 miles and counting.

Again thanks. JoeGopher & IBVic, - big thanks, I've ordered a Sav UR Ride kit on clearance from cycle solutions, and I've got the vice grip. SparkyBill, I looked up that black moly on the net, but only found gallon quanities, know where I can get a little less? Wingnutx7, funny as it sounds, only Tousley could get the Victory cable from Barnett of the 3 dealers I called. Crimsonaro, where did you get yours? But I'll wait till this fall for that if I go with a new cable. 06Shooter, I appreciate the input, but I'll stick with the Kingpin for a while longer.
Thanks again all,
Pimushe Kid

I got mine at Checker's Auto parts now called O'Reily's should have it in a tube. Or try NAPA.

Didn't buy it locally. Bought it from Conquest Customs. http://www.conquestcustoms.com/ Don't know if it's better. Never bought a brand new stock cable. Bought for stainless braid looks nice and functions, but that meant buying throttle cables and fast idle cable to match. It's an addiction.

All the talk about broken clutch cables has me kind of nervous. I am heading to Sturgis for the first time and don't want to break down. I purchased my save ur ride kit and have all the proper tools loaded. I was going to do some clutch cable maintenance before I left and couldn't find any of the black moly grease. I did find this:
Lucas Semi-sythetic Assembly lube with Moly. It is made for cams, lifters, and engine building. It came in a 4 oz bottle with a small tip for applying to small areas.
Does anyone see a problem with this or would this work?
Also, what do you use for lubricating the cable itself?
Thanks much.

I bought some of the Black Moly at NAPA on Lyndale in Bloomington last spring.

I have been using gun grease that is black molly also. It is best to take the upper cable end apart and clean it then grease it again. To lube the cable is to use engine oil and just a drop or two. You will want to clean and lube the end at the clutch also.

You know, it might be me? Much like the 3 ex-wives, I broke my 2nd clutch cable this morning at 0345 on the way to work. This time it broke at the bottom by the clutch actuator. Good thing I was a block from the terminal and in 3rd. I tried the suicide clutch big vise grip, and I didn't like that much. I just couldn't quite pull off the coordination. So I pulled a small vise grip out of the tool kit, got a purchase on the cable and it worked. Got home, installed the save-ur-ride which I now know I could have done in the parking lot.

I recommend rotating the vice-grip 90 degrees and getting a good "bite" on the output arm. Then tape the VG handle so it can't come undone. This has worked very well for me. Twice.
I like the paint on your side cover. Very cool.

I use the Victory cable lube (silicone) an Polaris starter grease on the barrel ends @ each oil change and before longer trips. I agree on removing burrs from the levers and the barrels.

Sleadhead and I were out riding yesterday. Sleadhead broke a cable at the leaver. Had a save-ur-ride but the barell went flying. He was lucky I had one and got back on the road. So every one should a spare barel. I just took my cabel a part to check it and put some more moly lube looked good. Use it works 15k and no problems. Just a heads up.:biker83:
